The Guarded Vigilant
How pressure shapes your relationship with authority

Why you needed to be guarded.
The Guarded Vigilant is not a flaw, but a protective intelligence. An adaptive pattern shaped by experiences where you felt unsafe in your environment; rejection, shame, conflict, betrayal, or emotional exposure.
Your system learned that distance felt safer than vulnerability, staying alert safer than relaxing, holding back safer than showing how you feel.
And so you adapted. You became more watchful and self-protective. More aware of what could turn against you. You learned to carefully scan conversations, relationships, and environments.
For many women, this pattern deepens over time through responsibility and the pressure of being judged, overlooked, undermined, or misunderstood.
You may have been told you are distant, or hard to read, but the truth is often the opposite. You feel more than you show. What’s hard is not that you don’t care, but that it stopped feeling safe to be seen.
“Your guardedness tells the story of all you survived and all that is worthy of recognition”
WHAT YOUR GUARDEDNESS WAS PROTECTING
Your hidden strength = Attunement
What feels unsafe to the Guarded Vigilant, is not just the behaviour or actions of others, but what she is perceiving or feeling and how much she notices from those around her. This level of sensitivity can quickly feel like overload and exposure to risk, particularly in competitive or dysfunctional environments. When feeling a need to ‘watch one’s back’, the Protective Intelligence says ‘The more I notice this, the more I get hurt’. And so, the guard goes up.
If the guardedness softened, the Protective Intelligence becomes The Attuned Guardian and what emerges is a woman who attunes to her environment. She is able to accurately read people and feel into the ‘field’ without being shaped by it. This is high-resolution social and emotional intelligence. Remaining calm and grounded whilst sensing everything around her is what enables others to settle and perform better.
As an Attuned Guardian, you become an anchor, because others are not having to adapt to you. They feel seen and understood instead of misread. You feel confident holding boundaries without having to put your walls up. Because you remain consistent and grounded, they experience coherence and emotional safety. Trust can be built, helping teams and relationships feel secure and open.
The Guarded Vigilant was an adaptation that protected you from your sensitivity. As you recognise what lies at the core of this intelligence you experience the safety you need for your presence and authority to emerge.

How to release your strength...
Below is a simple exercise that you can do in a minute to help you feel safer when connecting. It might feel awkward or uncomfortable at first, but the more you do this, particularly at those times when things feel pressured, the more you can integrate your responsive awareness with feeling grounded and centred as you lead.
A ONE MINUTE EXERCISE
Calm Energy Connection
· 01 ·
Soften your shoulders and take a slow breath.
You can keep your eyes open or closed.
Bring attention to the centre of your body.
· 02 ·
Picture this centre opening like a small flower.
Move your awareness outward from your centre to a living presence, a plant, person or animal nearby.
· 03 ·
Imagine a gentle loop of energy continuously flowing between you and the living presence,
moving forward and back in a figure of eight.
· 04 ·
Bring the loop and your awareness back to your body and offer quiet thanks.
Take one more slow breath and gently close the flower in your centre.

How this works
(Some of the neuroscience behind it)

When the Guarded Vigilant is active, the nervous system is primed to scan for threat. Attention is directed outward, searching for what might be unsafe, often at the cost of feeling settled within the body.
This practice gently reverses that pattern.
By first bringing awareness to your centre, you begin to anchor attention back into your body. This activates internal sensory pathways that signal safety and stability. As your breathing slows and your shoulders soften, the stress response begins to settle.
The visualisation of a soft opening, like a flower, introduces the possibility of connection without force. Rather than bracing or withdrawing, your system experiences a controlled, gradual sense of openness.
When you extend awareness outward toward a living presence, you are engaging social and relational pathways in the brain. The imagined loop of energy creates a sense of connection that is both active and contained. You are not losing yourself in the other, nor are you closing yourself off. You are experiencing a dynamic exchange.
This supports integration between vigilance and connection. The brain learns that it is possible to stay aware of your environment while remaining grounded in yourself.
Over time, this helps shift your system from constant alertness to responsive awareness, where connection feels safe rather than risky.
5 Signs your Attuned Guardian is emerging
You might not suddenly feel completely different, but the more you practice, the more you’ll begin to notice subtle shifts in how you feel in yourself and with others. You might notice moments where you feel more at ease, more present, or less guarded.
These are signs that your Attuned Guardian is beginning to come forward.
· 01 ·
You feel your body soften more easily, particularly in your shoulders, chest or breath.
· 02 ·
You notice yourself moving from watching others to being with them/
· 03 ·
You experience more ease in connecting with others, rather than tension
· 04
You stay more calm and centred in yourself when engaging.
05
You feel less drained and more balanced in your interactions
A Different Approach to Meeting Pressure

My hope is that this has given you some understanding of what is meant by ‘Protective Intelligence’ and you can see how it is an adaptive pattern that has been shaped by how your system responds under pressure.
You may however sense that you are running more than one pattern in yourself and this is not unusual.
Your system learned to protect itself in environment where safety, belonging, visibility and trust felt threatened. Different Protective intelligences will become active depending on the environment, what matters to you and the ways your nervous system found to keep you safe, in control, connected or accepted.
On one level this is primal memory and what our nervous system was biologically evolved to do.
So one pattern may be more active when you are holding responsibility, another in relationships and others when you find yourself in conflict, uncertainty or moments when you feel exposed or vulnerable.
The ‘Shift’ is not about deleting these patterns or needing to become someone different. The Shift happens when we recognise a protective response surfacing and identify what it is trying to protect. Then we can learn how to work with it rather than against it and redirect the pattern towards an outcome that we are wanting.
Stephen R. Covey in his book ‘The 7 Habits of Highly Effected People’ said the following words which he attributed to Viktor Frankl, Austrian neurologist, psychiatrist and holocaust survivor.
“Between stimulus and response is our greatest power—the freedom to choose.”
Once you are able to identify the Protective Intelligence beneath your reactions, you begin to see yourself differently. With this awareness, you can create more choice, self-trust and anchor your authority in a way that feels aligned and safe.
What I hope you are beginning to see here is that Protective Intelligences are not simply a personality trait or coping mechanism, but part of a wider protective system that influences how you respond under pressure, navigate relationships, hold authority, and experience yourself within challenging environments.

3 ways to continue the conversation...
Where you go from here is entirely up to you. Some women sit with what resonated for them in these insights. Others want to contribute tot he wider conversation, explore their results more deeply, or stay connected to the ideas and work as it evolves.
If one of those next steps feels useful, you're very welcome to continue from here.
01
Be part of the Listening Project

I am currently speaking with women who recognise themselves in the experiences described in these insights as part the research and listening process behind the book I am writing.
These are relaxed, confidential conversations about work, identity, visibility, self-trust, authority and the often invisible dynamics many women navigate professionally.
This is not a coaching session, discovery call or sales conversation. There's nothing to prepare, prove or commit to. You're welcome to share as much or as little as feels comfortable.
I am simply interested in hearing real experiences, patterns, concerns and stories from women living this in real time.
If that feels meaningful to contribute to, I'd genuinely love to hear from you.

02
Move from insight to integration with 1:1 coaching

A focused two-session process designed to help you explore your results more deeply and begin rebuilding your authority from the inside out.
Together, over two one hour sessions, we will look at;
Structured, compassionate and trauma-aware support for women ready to move from insight into integration.

03
Join me at "The Authority Shift"
Thoughtful letters for women rethinking authority, visibility and ambition after workplace harm.

Final thoughts...
You do not need to become a different kind of woman to embody your authority.
What’s already within you; your perception, discernment, sensitivity, and strength is not the problem.
You don't have to become harder or more self-protective to move forward. Instead recognise what the pressure asked of you, understand how you adapted, rebuild trust in yourself, and allow your authority to emerge more naturally.
I hope your experience with this Calibrator has helped you better understand both the pressure you adapted to and the intelligence within the pattern itself

I work with women leaders navigating bullying, bias, and burnout, combining trauma-aware coaching and nervous system insight to help you reclaim confidence and authority.
